“The sounds of primitive magic”: Orff’s “Carmina Burana”

To determine the final work of our season finale, the members of the Philharmonic were given several major works on which to vote. The winner: Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, surely the best-known and -loved choral work of the 20th century. “Serene cheer and warm sunshine”: Brahms’ Second

The Philharmonic presents the third U.S. premiere of the season: “Pyramid”, a stirring tone poem by Sweden-based American composer Molly Kien (“a major new voice” — Fanfare Magazine). The winner of the Philharmonic’s 2019 Don Bushell Competition, the radiant soprano Allison Pohl, will be heard in a selection of lieder by Richard Strauss. Closing the concert is Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, the sunniest of its composer’s four symphonies and a perennial audience favorite.

Legendary Women

A concert featuring first U.S. performances of music by two women who bucked the mores of their times and produced important bodies of work in spite of the prevailing prejudice against women as composers. Mel Bonis (1858-1937), a contemporary of her compatriots Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson, wrote evocative music simultaneously Romantic and Impressionistic. Seattle Philharmonic 75th Anniversary Gala

The Philharmonic’s gala 75th season opener will present music spanning from the 18th century to a fanfare especially written for the occasion by acclaimed composer Gina Gillie.
